Buckeye Father Arrested for Belt Whipping Child
A Buckeye father is behind bars facing charges related to hitting his child with a belt. The child suffered significant welting and bruising on the legs, arms and butt.
On 2/26/2019 about 11:00 a.m., Buckeye police responded to a local elementary school regarding injuries school staff observed on a juvenile. Police received information that the juvenile was hit with a belt by her father, 39-year-old Robert Sumler, the night before.
During the investigation, police saw several large belt strike marks on the juvenile’s legs and arms that were welted and bruised.
Detectives contacted Sumler who admitted to striking the juvenile in the butt and legs with his belt as discipline because he was notified the child had gotten in trouble at school. He also indicated that he was unaware of the injuries caused because the victim was wearing pants at the time.
